Professional experience

Dr. Lei received his bachelor’s degree in 1987 and master’s degree in 1989 in mechanical engineering from Tsinghua University in China. He then worked for State CIMS Engineering Research Center in China as a manufacturing engineer from 1990 to 1993 and later for the Department of Precision Instruments & Mechanology at Tsinghua University as a lecturer from1993 to 1994. In 1999, he received a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. In July 1999, he joined the department of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering at Kansas State University as assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 2005 and full professor in 2013.

Research

Lei’s research includes femtosecond laser micro/nano machining and surface texturing of various materials for a variety of applications including tribology, photonic devices, microfluidic devices, MEMS, nanotechnology, etc., machining of difficult-to-machine materials including structural ceramics, titanium alloys, superalloys, glass, and composites, laser assisted materials processing with an emphasis on laser assisted machining of ceramics, mechanics and thermal modeling of manufacturing processes using FEA and DEM, and development of novel cutting tools. In these areas, Lei’s research group conducted both numerical modeling and simulation and experimental investigation to gain fundamental understanding and develop new manufacturing technologies. Currently, his work in focused on laser micro/nano machining based on spatial, temporal and spectral control of laser-matter interaction.

Academic highlights

Lei authored and/or co-authored two book chapters, more than 70 journal papers, and more than 60 conference papers, which, as of 2016, have resulted in a total of over 974 citations and an H-index of 18 according to Scopus. His research group presented more than 70 talks at national and international conferences, universities and workshops. Lei directed four completed doctoral dissertations and nine completed master's theses. He also hosted nine visiting scholars. Lei served the manufacturing community as member of the NAMRI/SME Scientific Committee and co-organizers of several symposia in international manufacturing conferences. Lei's work has been recognized by several awards including the SME Research Initiation Award in 2001, the NSF CAREER Award in 2002, the Big 12 Faculty Fellowship Award in 2003, the ASME MED BOSS Award in 2006 and 2008, the College of Engineering Dean’s Award of Excellence in Research in 2016.
