Resume critique and interview 'speed dating' connect Academy members with IMSE students
Prior to the K-State career fair this September, IMSE students were given a chance to brush up their resume and interviewing skills with the IMSE Professional Academy.
Academy members came together on Sept. 15, the evening before their fall meeting, to socialize and connect with students at the Tallgrass Taphouse in downtown Manhattan. This was the third year the Academy has hosted this event, and it was the best-attended so far.
“It is encouraging to see so many students eager to take time for self-improvement,” Academy events chair Ryan McGuire said. “It truly does position them for success in the competitive job market.”
Students brought copies of their resumes and rotated among the Academy members, who reviewed them for content and presentation.
The second activity of the night was a round of speed interviews, in which alumni played the role of interviewer, choosing a challenging question to pose to each student as they rotated through quick three-minute rounds. Students gave their best impromptu answers, and Academy members provided feedback and suggestions for handling tough interview questions.
“It gave us a professional, yet informal, way to get to know several members of the IMSE Professional Academy,” senior Emily Bailey said. “It’s easier and more comfortable to talk if there is an activity to focus on. These are some of my favorite and best networking opportunities. K-State IE alumni are so nice!”
“The enthusiastic participation from Academy members and students alike is what makes the event such a success,” McGuire said.
"This even was a great opportunity to learn from graduates who were in my shoes at one point," senior Sarah Newell said. "I hope to join the Professional Academy after my graduation this spring to continue the work of giving back to current students."
The IMSE Professional Academy started in 2012 to provide opportunities for alumni to connect with each other and support the department while having fun. They also sponsor the IMSE Professional Academy Mentor program, which has grown this year to more than 80 mentor/mentee pairs.
