Abstract: The article explains the principle of rotary ultrasonic machining with diamond tools. It compares its field of application with that of the established ultrasonic impact grinding method, and briefly describes the function of the components necessary to ultrasonically excite a rotating diamond tool. The factors governing the size and mass of diamond tools that can be used is explained. Machining performance data is presented showing the rates of cut for particular machining operations and materials with and without ultrasonics.
