A number of new applications of ultrasonic technology in both machining and welding are discussed. Whether in machining diamond dies or welding parts that differ significantly in heat capacity, ultrasonics is solving more and more design problems. In the past, ultrasonics has been limited to machining tiny holes in ceramics. Recently, however, engineers have been increasing the size and variety of cutting tools so that hard, brittle materials can be drilled, milled, threaded and ground on a larger scale. Also, ultrasonics makes possible fast, clean, low-energy joining for materials usually thought to be impossible or difficult to weld.
