The article shows the general relationship of the tool to the workpiece in ultrasonic machining (impact grinding). The overcut is usually about twice the grit size. The action is a chipping away of small pieces of the workpiece under the impact of the sharp grit points, much as each single sharp grit on a grinding wheel digs out a minute chip from the workpiece. The 20,000 hits per second in USM result in a steady and rapid penetration rate.
